Olikulam is a relocation village in Batticaloa. Populated mostly by women and children who've lost their husbands, they are searching for ways to make a living for the first time in their lives. With the help of dartone the women have taken their skills in weaving and cross-stitching and turned it into a business.
The villagers are very skilled in the art of making reed mats, handbags, and other weaved products. We import these products to the U.S.A and distribute them to stores in southern California for sale.
While in Olikulam, we were also able to provide supplies such as sewing machines and the peculiar little machine they use for flattening the reeds. In addition, we built walls around the wells in the village so that the women could bathe in privacy. |
